The clip-clop of horse’s hooves an hour before announced a second carriage at the Bennet country home.

The entire Bennet clan along with Mr. Bingley came outside to greet the guests, an excited throng looking expectantly at the carriage doors.

“My, Mrs. Bennet! Longbourn is flush with guests today. Another proposal, do you think?” Mr. Bennet asked, leaning towards his wife.

“You jest too much, Mr. Bennet!” Mrs. Bennet smacked her husband on the shoulder with her folded fan. “What other of our girls could have caught a fine gentlemen’s eye?”

Mr. Bingley furrowed his brow. Jane whispered something to him, and he nodded and whispered something back.

The door opened, and Mr. Darcy alighted. His gaze swept over the Bennets, rested on Elizabeth, and he smiled.

Mrs. Bennet gasped. “Mr. Darcy! What brings you to Longbourn? Did you wish to meet with Mr. Bingley?” She waved her fan towards Mr. Bingley and Jane. “Mr. Bingley has proposed to our Jane! And he is staying for dinner. We can set another plate. Mrs. Hill!”

“Lovely. But first,” his gaze remained locked with Elizabeth’s. “If the message Miss Elizabeth conveyed to my sister in Pemberley remains the same—?”

“It is!” Elizabeth cut in. “Yes. As I said.”

“Then I should like to speak with Mr. Bennet a moment, if it is convenient. In private.”

"Certainly, Mr. Darcy," Mr. Bennet replied, and they retired to Mr. Bennet's study.

Elizabeth could not contain her exhilaration and delight. All of her doubts were washed away when Mr. Darcy stepped into the house at Mr. Bennet’s side.

After what seemed an interminable amount of time, Mr. Darcy appeared in the sitting room entrance. "Miss Elizabeth, your father wishes to speak with you."

To Elizabeth’s surprise, Mr. Darcy seemed more worried than glad. His expression had that stiffness she had before assumed pride but now wondered if it was nerves.

Elizabeth rose and went down the hallway to the study where her father was waiting. Her father stood at the windows overlooking the garden. He turned, a bemused expression on his face. “Lizzy,'' said he, “what are you doing? Are you out of your senses, to be accepting this man? Have not you always hated him?''

“Not always,” Elizabeth said. She explained it all, except for her midnight rendezvous with Mr. Darcy in the library and Mr. Wickham’s near ruining of Mr. Darcy’s sister as the former was too embarrassing and the latter not her secret to tell. When she was finished, her father let out a lengthy sigh.

"Then, you have avoided both Mr. Collins and spinsterhood, it would appear." Mr. Bennet smirked when he said it, his eyes twinkling with mirth, before he grew more serious. "And you are truly happy with this match?"

"Oh, yes, Father. I love him with all my heart."

“Well, my dear,'' he said, “I have no more to say. If this be the case, he deserves you. I could not have parted with you, my Lizzy, to any one less worthy.''

Elizabeth ran to her father and embraced him tightly. "Thank you, Father. Thank you."

“You best be about flummoxing your mother, who had you prepared to be an old croon,” he chuckled.
