âThat was an FBI agent outside the restaurant, wasnât it?â Tom Heller asked Toni Wagner. They were back at the Watergate apartment.
âMost likely, but you handled yourself well. You didnât panic, thatâs the important thing.â
âWhat was he doing there? Waiting for me?â Heller was frightened. In the old days there was always Moscow. He wasnât so sure of that now.
âNo, theyâre watching Tyson.â
âThey suspect him?â
Toni nodded. âBut youâre safe. Even if they got a good look at you, which in the darkness and under the circumstances I donât think happened, they wonât be able to identify you. Youâve got no record. No arrests. No military service. Nothing.â
âBut what about the note I passed him? Marina Demin is dead. She canât want to see him. I donât understand.â
âNeither do I, Joseph. I just follow my orders like you.â
âAre you trying to turn Tyson, make him a mole for the Center? Like Kim Philby and the others?â
Toni grinned. âYouâve been watching too many spy movies.â
âGoddammit, talk to me. Tell me whatâs happening:â
âNo,â Toni said point-blank.
âBut my life is on the line too.â
âYouâre going back to Wisconsin in the morning. Your work here for us is finished. You did a good job, as usual. Donât screw it up now.â
âBut itâs been so many years out there,â Heller pleaded. âChrist, I never knew what was going on. I never knew if youâd call me again. Or if I was just forgotten. It gets lonely, goddammit. Donât you people understand? Itâs not like the old days.â
âNo, itâs not like the old days,â Toni said gently. âBut Iâm sure that after what youâve done for us this time, Center will be calling on you again. Very soon.â
Heller nodded. âI understand,â he said. He managed a slight smile. âYou should have seen the look on his face when he finally recognized me. I thought he was going to have a heart attack.â
âDo you remember him from the old days at college?â
âYes. He was always shooting his mouth off about how he wanted to save the world from itself, while screwing his way across campus.â
âWho was Marina Demin?â
âMy wife,â Heller said.
Toni was rocked. She hadnât known.
Heller read something of that from the expression on her face. âHis biggest infatuation of all was with her.â
âWhat happened to her?â
âShe went back to Moscow.â Heller turned away. He felt ashamed that the ache was still so strong in his heart. It had happened many years ago.
âDid you ever hear from her? You said she was dead.â
âShe was killed in a car accident in Leningrad, or so I was told.â
âAnd thatâs it? Thatâs all you ever heard?â
Heller looked bleakly at Toni. âThatâs it,â he said, his throat constricting. Christ. Christ.
