Chapter 12
Jack sat with his head slumped into his hands, for all hope of joining the campaign to Europe seemed lost. At every turn he was met with seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
âWhy did you do that? Why did you anger the Lord?â
Latimer nodded in agreement with Coxon, for he much enjoyed being prickly and obnoxious at times, but he knew when not to.
âBecause he is a man of honour,â declared Alonso.
âHow? How is that the honourable thing to do?â
âWe are all here because of him, because we could see something in him, which is a rare thing, that we could trust him to the very end, no matter what that end and no matter how difficult things become.â
âThatâs all very well, but now we have nothing. We have no employment, no ship, no money, nothing,â added Latimer.
âIn business a man knows he must deal with men he does not approve of,â added Butcher.
An argument erupted amongst them as Jack remained in his solemn state.
âEnough!â Demarose gestured towards Jack so that they might listen and hear it from him. Jack took a deep breath and finally looked up and into their faces, which were filled with disappointment and anger.
âI would not follow that man Cecil to war. You saw the company he keeps. That man would not hesitate to send us to our deaths, not because it was necessary, but for no reason or any reason he could muster. That man has no honour.â
âThose are dangerous words to speak of such a man,â replied Butcher.
âSome say he was behind the Gunpowder Treason Plot,â remarked Latimer, referring to the notorious attempted regicide against King James in 1605.
âWas he not the man who discovered the plot?â Demarose asked.
âSo he says, or gave up his conspirators to save his own skin?â
âI would not put it past him,â agreed Jack.
âLet us leave this idle and dangerous speculation behind, for no good can come of it,â insisted Butcher.
âWhat now then Master Targeteer, what do we do? Where do we go?â Latimer asked aggressively.
Jack shrugged as he did not know, he only followed his heart.
âExcuse me, Mr Morgan?â
He looked over to see the woman he had defended from Cecil and her companion, both with something nothing of them possessed, a horse that they led by the reins.
âYes?â
âThank you, thank you, you are angel.â
Latimer laughed.
âGod wills me to war, and he has set me on a path to you,â she declared passionately.
âWe will fight for you,â insisted her companion.
âI appreciate the offer, but I have nothing to give. I cannot pay you nor make any guarantees. For we too seek to march with the army to the Palatinate, but without the favour of Lord Cecil, I do not know how it can be achieved.â
âThe Lord will lead us and through him we shall find a way.â
âWhat are your names?â
âMy name is Bridget, and this is my husband, Robert Calverley.â
Both were several years older than Jack and looked as though they had lived a great deal more than he had in those years, and yet they now offered to follow the young man freely.
