For Fiona, the next few days were a delicious whirlwind of clandestine visits to Maggie's bedroom combined with preparations for her brother's wedding. In between all of this, she had a dim awareness that the entire town was prepping for Moose Madness, as evidenced by the giant moose posters and half-finished parade floats everywhere. Fiona had forgotten how into this ridiculous local festival the whole town got.

"You know, for the first time, I don't really mind as much as usual," Maggie admitted as they lay tangled in her bed with the lights out. Another advantage to having a very tall girlfriend was that Maggie had a very big bed, at least for a one-person bed in the room where Maggie had been sleeping since she was a little girl. It wasn't ample for two people, but it kept them from falling off onto the floor.

"Mind what?" Fiona asked.

"Moose Madness. I always hated it, growing up. It made me think about everything I couldn't change about myself. But this time I'm not really thinking about it as much. It's almost like Mom being so involved in it is making it easier for me to just take it as it comes. At least now that Mom's stopped asking me to dress up in that stupid moose costume."

"She what?"

"Oh, didn't I tell you? Mom wanted me to be the Moose Queen."

Fiona choked with laughter. She had completely forgotten about the festival's mascot. Some unlucky person was going to have to dress up in that ridiculous costume with the crown sewn on its head and stand there in the sweltering sun waving at the crowd.

"Of course," Maggie said gloomily, "if she doesn't find anyone to do it, she might be asking me at the last minute anyway."

"Would you really hate it that much?" Fiona asked. "It sounds kind of terrible, but it might be the fun kind of terrible."

"No," Maggie said flatly. "It's bad enough that I can't admit what I really am, but dressing up as a fake version of it just feels wrong. And that stupid nickname—don't say you're sorry."

Fiona made an effort to swallow her guilt. Maggie was right, it was self-indulgent of her. Her apologies couldn't change the past. If Maggie was willing to move forward, she had to be willing too. "Okay, no sorries, but I could try giving you another orgasm to make up for it."

"Ohhh." Maggie went a little melty in her arms. "That's two already tonight. I don't know, how many can a person have?"

"I don't know. Want to find out?"

For someone who'd been a virgin until less than a week ago, Maggie was taking to sex in a major way.

But that was part of what the mate bond did—a small part. The sex was amazing. And the sense of companionship was even better. People had told Fiona what it was like, but she wasn't sure if she'd ever quite believed them. It was everything she'd been told and more. Finding your mate meant never being alone, even when you were apart.
