After school, Maia and Sita went to Ionie’s house. Lottie persuaded her mum to let her join them after she’d finished her tennis lesson.
“I told her we’re doing a project together,” she said as they hurried down the lane to the clearing. “It was the only way she’d let me come.”
“It is a project, only not a school one,” said Maia. “It’s a magic one!”
They reached the clearing and called Bracken, Sorrel, Juniper and Willow. Today there was no playing. They sat straight down and told the animals what had been going on.
Sorrel hissed as Maia told them how she’d seen nothing but shadows when she had tried to find the culprits behind the night’s activities. “We have to find out who’s doing these things. I’m sure it’s the same person and I’d bet one of my whiskers that Shades are involved.”
“It’s strange that Lottie woke up feeling like something bad was happening in the night when it really was,” said Sita.
“It was probably just a coincidence,” said Lottie. “After all, I thought something horrible was happening two nights ago but nothing bad was going on then.”
Sorrel gave her a thoughtful look. “There are never coincidences when it comes to magic. I have a suspicion… But no—” She broke off. “For now I believe we should focus on the mystery of what’s been happening in the village. We need to find out if Shades were behind these incidents.”
“I’ve had an idea about that,” said Ionie. “Why don’t I shadow-travel with Sita to the school garden and then we can call you and Willow and see if you can smell any Shades near the flower bed?” Some Star Animals like Sorrel and Willow had the ability to smell when Shades had been around, causing bad things to happen.
“An excellent idea!” Sorrel purred.
“Let’s go, Sita,” said Ionie. “All the teachers will have gone home by now.” She ran to a patch of shadows and held her hand out. Sita joined her and, as their fingers touched, both girls and their animals vanished.
“I wish we could have gone, too,” said Lottie.
“I can watch what’s happening using magic,” said Maia. She took out her mirror. “Show me Sita and Ionie!”
The surface swirled and an image of the school playground appeared. Maia saw Ionie and Sita suddenly appear in a patch of shadows beside the Reception block and look around cautiously. A second later, Sorrel and Willow were there beside them. “They’re at school,” she said to Lottie. “Sorrel and Willow are sniffing around… Oh!”
“What is it?” Lottie demanded.
“Sorrel’s tail just puffed up and Willow’s ears have gone flat back,” said Maia, frowning. Those weren’t good signs.
