Chapter 16

“Who...?” Beau raised his head and he knew who it was in his arms but he wasn’t sure about anything else. For a moment, Beau didn’t know who he was anymore or how he was supposed to act or if he’d even get away with it. But Beau knew it was Hal’s arms wound tight around him and Hal’s face pushed against his chest. Their legs were tangled and they were naked and Beau wasn’t sure if he’d ever felt more content. The sun spilled through the window, filling the room with warm peace and Beau wondered if he’d ever stayed in bed after sunrise. It was nice and he couldn’t think of a thing to scowl at or swear about. The muscles in his cheeks quivered and he realized he was smiling. “Who am I?”

“Hmmm...?” Hal hummed and it turned into a lazy, delighted sigh as he tipped his face back. He was brighter than the sun that kissed his cheeks and made his eyes glitter. “This, Beau,” he whispered as he pushed Beau onto his back and rose over him. He settled over Beau and twisted his fingers in his hair. “This is exactly what I want,” he said as his lips traced Beau’s. Hal sucked on his lip and a burst of joy swelled in Beau’s chest. He laughed and held on tight to Hal as he rolled them.

“This has to be a dream. It can’t be real,” he said and searched Hal’s eyes for a punchline or regrets. “When are you going to wake up and realize there’s no prince charming under all of this?” He asked. Hal’s brows pulled together and his lips tightened as he considered and Beau was mad at himself for asking. He didn’t want Hal to wake up anymore and got nervous. What if he wakes up like Layla and realizes I’m not enough? It hurt in his heart and there was a cold knot in Beau’s stomach at the thought of losing Hal too. He felt weak again and it scared him but it was too late to retreat. Hal knew. Everyone knew.

“Oh, no, you don’t!” Hal said and grabbed Beau’s beard. He glared up at him and clicked his teeth. “I’m not a princess and I know exactly who you are. You’re mine.” He widened his eyes and dared Beau to argue or doubt him. “I’ll keep turning up like a bad penny until you accept it because I’m not giving up or going anywhere. We belong together.”

“If you’re sure,” Beau chuckled but his voice wavered and his eyes stung as he kissed Hal. “I don’t know how or why but I’m scared as hell you’ll change your mind,” he admitted.

“Change my mind?” Hal blinked up at him in confusion. “I knew I was meant to be yours the first time we met. You’re exactly what I would have wished for. But I can’t change my mind because I’ve never had a choice.”

“You knew?” They were just the shapes of words and Beau was sure his heart had stopped.
