Madame Sherri’s Castle

Just across the Vermont state line, one of the most beguiling sights in the Brattleboro area is Madame Sherri’s Castle (Chesterfield, New Hampshire, www.chesterfieldoutdoors.com/madame-sherri-forest [URL inactive]). Enter the forest of Chesterville and take a short, pleasant stroll along a boggy pond to reach the crumbling ruins and preserved spiral staircase of a castle-esque mansion that belonged to Antoinette Sherri, a Broadway costume designer and New England’s real-life Jay Gatsby. A social hedonist, Sherri would use the mansion to host parties for her friends from the New York theater circuit during the 1940s and ’50s.

A fire destroyed Sherri’s castle in 1962, but the Chesterfield Conservation Commission preserved the ruins and also built networks of trails through the surrounding forest. Most visitors never tread beyond the castle, which is a shame: The two-mile Daniels Mountain Loop offers a fun ascent to Moon Ledge, where hikers can gaze toward the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts. To reach this trail, take the gentle Ann Stokes Trail southeast from the castle ruins for one mile, alongside a boggy area.
