Puerto Plata puts on its own Carnival (http://www.discoverpuertoplata.com/es/que-hacer ) in February—the parades and fanfare take place every Sunday afternoon of the month along the Malecón and Parque Independencia. It’s a colorful time to be in the city and a great way to experience the importance of carnival culture in the DR. Costumes are vibrant and showcase African and native Taíno influences. Various characters are represented like the Diablo Cojuelo or the limping devil, inherited from Spanish culture. Each carnival year, a new King Momo is crowned, symbolizing the person who has helped preserve tradition, along with a carnival queen. A final grand parade takes place on the fourth and last Sunday of the month, or it could end up falling during the first week of March.

The Annual Cultural Festival takes place the third week of June and celebrates both Dominican and Puerto Plateño culture with traditional folk music, merengue, African dances, and of course, plenty of local arts and crafts, food, and all-around merriment.

Playa Dorada’s Caribbean Cigar Night (www.cigarnightpop.com , US$100 pp) is in March with all the major tobacco-producing brands in attendance. The evening is for wining, dancing, and dining at one of the resorts. It’s a night to dress up and rub elbows with Puerto Plata’s elite while celebrating all things cigar.

Held the third week of October, the annual Merengue and Caribbean Rhythms Festival brings all of Puerto Plata down to the Malecón for four days of merengue dancing to various live bands.
