Chapter Twelve

The lights were on in Emily’s apartment, and Seth thought he heard Susannah barking up there. It took her a while to answer the front door.

“Seth.” Twin lines formed between her brows. “What are you doing here?”

Why was he here? Seth rubbed the back of his neck. “I was passing by and figured this was a good time to talk about Taylor—if you let me in.”

After hesitating, she opened the door wider and stepped back. Once inside, he noted her loose, faded sweatshirt, raggedy jeans and fuzzy slippers. Her hair was pulled into a knot on top of her head with a plastic clip, and loose strands floated around her face. She looked sexy—go figure.

“Uh, were you in bed?” he asked, imagining her there, naked under him.

“In these clothes?” She laughed. “I was cleaning my apartment.”

“On a Friday night?”

“I know, I’m pathetic.” The fine lines returned and deepened, and she crossed her arms. “I thought we made an agreement not to be alone together.”

“Right, but you wanted to tell me about Taylor, and since I was out, I figured I may as well hear it in person.” Her closed body language and slightly compressed lips let him know what she thought of that idea. He shouldn’t have come. He reached for the door. “Never mind—I’ll call you tomorrow instead.”

“You drove all the way over here, and you’re obviously concerned about Taylor. You may as well stay. But I won’t invite you upstairs, and let’s keep our distance from each other.”

“Agreed.”

She sat down at Mrs. Oakes’s desk. Seth took the couch across the room. “This far enough away?” he teased.

Her lips didn’t so much as twitch.

“Where’s Susannah?” he asked, crossing his foot over his knee.

“In the apartment.” Emily pulled the clip from her hair and twisted it into a new knot. Not about to be corralled, the loose strands quickly fluttered free.

“I’ve never seen you with your hair up like that,” he said.

“It’s not exactly flattering.”

“I think it’s cute. You could almost pass for a high school kid.”

“Which is exactly why I only wear it up when I’m cleaning house. I’m thirty years old, and I don’t want to look like a teen.”

No one could mistake her for that. She didn’t have a lot of curves, but she was all woman.

She sniffed the air and wrinkled her nose. “You reek of cigar smoke and beer.”

“You can smell me all the way over there?” Seth figured he must stink pretty bad. “I played poker with my brother tonight, but I only had one cigar and two beers over three hours. I’m totally sober. Do you have any breath mints?”

Emily rooted through Mrs. Oakes’s desk, then tossed him a packet of Tic Tacs. “Speaking of your brother, his wife, Lana, contacted me the other day. They heard about The Wagging Tail from Taylor. I’m going out to their ranch next week, to talk with them about adopting a dog.”

“Sly mentioned that earlier tonight. Nick played poker, too, and another guy, a cousin of Sly’s wife who owns the ranch adjacent to theirs.
