CHAPTER ELEVEN

“TIME FOR LUNCH, EVERYONE.” Zach jumped off the back of the hay wagon and wiped his hot face with the hem of his shirt. His mom’s truck was parked outside the field along a dirt road, and she walked toward them carrying a blue cooler. Although it was only midday, he’d been working here since five this morning and likely wouldn’t stop until nine at night. He wasn’t the only one, though, and at this time of year, field meals were a necessity, not a luxury.

“Take a look at that.” Cole slapped Zach’s back and gave a low whistle. “You’ve got special company, bro.”

“What? Who?” Zach turned and shaded his eyes from the sun with his hat brim. Behind his mom, Beth carried another cooler, and the collie dogs, Jess and Sadie, brought up the rear. He was glad to see her.

In the three days since the overnight camping trip, he and Beth had spent every free moment together, sometimes with Ellie but often alone, mostly talking but a bit more kissing too. And with each sliver of time they spent together, he fell for her a little harder and tried not to think about what his life would be like when she left.

“Beth looks like she belongs on a Montana ranch, doesn’t she?” Cole laughed and poked Zach in the ribs.

“Of course she doesn’t.” Yet, as Beth walked across the field in jeans, a simple white T-shirt, boots and a white cowboy hat she must have borrowed from Molly or Zach’s mom, she sure was more Montana than Chicago, including the dogs bounding around her feet.

“Something wrong with your eyes? All Beth needs is jeans that are a bit more worn-in and a few kids and you’ve got a picture for a family Christmas card right there.”

“Stop it. Go help Mom, why don’t you?” Zach poked Cole back. Growing up in a big family he was used to teasing but, after Dani, not this kind. Leaving his brother to meet their mom, he walked toward Beth and took the cooler. “Hey.”

“Hey yourself.” She laughed. “Hey or hay?” She gestured to the hay field and scattered workers.

“Both.” Zach brushed dirt off his jeans. He couldn’t kiss her here, not with an audience, but he sure wanted to. “This is a nice surprise.” He carried the cooler to the edge of the field and set it in the shade of one of the wagons.

“Ellie’s taking a jewelry-making workshop at Rosa’s studio, so I was free.” Beth gave him a dimpled smile. “Your mom called and asked me if I could help her out, so why not?”

Although his mom could always use help with field meals, her bringing Beth out here likely wasn’t accidental. He glanced at his mom in another patch of shade with Bryce, Cole, Molly and the rest of the crew, and she gave him a little wave.

“We made ham sandwiches with cheese and topped with greens from your mom’s garden.” Beth took the lid off the cooler and handed Zach a sandwich parcel wrapped in waxed paper.
