Two days later, I was healthy enough to ride. That miracle accounted for the wary eyes that followed my every step. I'd seen those stares before, and they always meant it was time for me to move on. But there was no fear in their eyes, like most other times. If I were the devil, I had redeemed myself by freeing the town of that unspeakable terror. The bard met me at the stable.

"One last drink?" He smiled.

"I think I will pass, amigo," I replied. "You staying on?"

"For now. They seem to like my music."

"Maybe you all can find that peace together."

"Maybe. And you?"

"He's not the only one."

He nodded. I could tell he wanted to ask.

"Go ahead," I said.

"You were healed too?"

"No." I looked down, then back into his eyes. "I held the spear. I killed him."

"So, you were a Roman?"

"Yes."

"And this is your punishment? Wandering the borderlands?"

"Apparently so."

"Well, good luck Roman." He extended his hand.

"You too." I returned his grip and then pulled myself up into the saddle. "Save me some tequila for when I come back through."

"No promises, my friend."
