I parked my Honda in front of the library and ran a few books I’d checked out inside. I was heading back to my car when I heard someone yelling, “Hey, Josie—JOSIE WAIT UP!!!”

I pulled on the handle of my car door until I realized the voice was drawing nearer to me. I looked up to see the Italian supermodel, Imelda, waving me down. I couldn’t help an eye roll at her getting my name wrong.

“It’s Jo-LEE,” I enunciated. “Not Jo-SEE.”

“Oh, sorry about that,” she said unapologetically.

I stared awkwardly at her for what felt like ten minutes. “What did you need?” I finally asked.

“I wanted to see if you’d be uncomfortable with me asking Mick out for dinner while I’m in town.” She stared down at her well-manicured hand then flicked her eyes up without moving her head.

Would I be uncomfortable? Uncomfortable? Um, YES! You tall, lanky—

“I mean, no. Why would I be uncomfortable?”

“You just seemed—so, what’s the word? Per—perplexing the other day.”

Perplexing? Me? Witch don’t even—

“I don’t understand,” I said, looking around for a way to leave this conversation. Of course, no one I knew was out walking during this gorgeous spring afternoon.

“Exactly,” Imelda spat out. “Oh, awkward, that was the word I meant. You are awkward.” She towered over me, smoothing out her long, thick locks then flipping them over her shoulder.

I half-expected her to challenge me to a walk-off right in the middle of Leavensport. “Awkward? I’m not awkward.” I finally worked up the courage to say what I thought—even if she was right.

“Sorry, my English is not great. I didn’t mean to be so antagonistic—I have been told that since I’ve been doing my Krav Maga training, I have been more aggressive.”

So, you can use the word antagonistic perfectly, but you struggle with the English language. Okay, you catty little—

“No worries, I completely understand.” I laid a hand on her forearm with my most sugary fake voice and grinned at her as if I felt sorry for her.

Imelda’s eyes narrowed.

“I worry you don’t understand the type of family you married into,” Imelda said out of the blue.

She knew exactly the game she was playing. I was tempted to blurt it all out but I knew that she was an old family friend and Lord knows that the Milano family is not thrilled with me. Oh, screw it!

“I know EXACTLY the kind of man I married. That’s all I need to know.” I crossed my arms, hoping it came across as haughty and not pouty. Who did she think she was anyway? I knew exactly what the Milano family was and so did Mick. It’s why he changed his last name and became a cop. As connected as he was to his family, he didn’t agree with their choices and lifestyle. I hated who they were as much as Mick and found it odd that his family never brought it up. Mick and I talked about it a lot and I know it’s something he worked on in therapy.
