Chapter 63

The knock echoed loudly in the cold, still room, immediately drawing everyone's attention. Sanam's eyes widened in anxiety, her fingers clenched tightly around the hem of her shirt. Monk's senses, already heightened, felt the adrenaline rush once more. The room fell into silence, the knock serving as the sole reminder of the outside world.

"Come on, hide yourself." Khan signalled at the door from where Monk and Sanam had found the secret entry to Khan's room—the hidden tunnel.

Monk and Sanam rushed towards it without a question. Locking the door from his side, Khan hid his gun in its usual place.

The knocking on the door had now intensified. "Open the door!"

"Wait," Khan said. He went to the attached bathroom and threw some water on his kurta to make it look like he was inside. He came out and switched on the light. Then, he finally opened the door.

As soon as the door was unlocked, five soldiers rushed inside the room.

"Search the room," their commander yelled at his men, and they hurried.

"I had warned you not to lock the room," he looked at Ramiz Raja Khan.

"And you think I will listen to you? Tell your General Bajwa, he can arrest me, but he cannot own me."

"What were you doing inside?"

"I was in the bathroom. Before that I was sleeping."

"Sleeping? There was a blast outside, and you only woke up to use the bathroom?"

"Blast? Ahh that…! I thought the Pakistan Army was celebrating the crushing of Pakistan's people mandate by putting the sitting Prime Minister of the country under house arrest."

"We are not celebrating anything. That blast was done by your supporters to divert our attention."

"I have no clue what you are talking about."

The commander eyed him suspiciously. "You expect me to believe that you know nothing about it?"

"I am under house arrest. Your men are making sure that I do not have contact with anyone outside this place. So how can you explain accusing me of orchestrating this blast or whatever it was? And why should I be responsible for what others do outside this room? Isn't the security of this place your responsibility? How could a blast occur under your watch? Were you able to catch anyone?"

The commander's face turned a shade redder, clearly irked by Khan's taunts. "Mind your tone, Khan. You are in enough trouble as it is."

Khan raised an eyebrow, his demeanor calm. "No, you mind your tone, commander. Bajwa won't like it when he learns that a blast happened outside this place and you don't even have anyone in your custody already. He is a ruthless man, and you know it better than me. He will not spare you and your men. So rather than wasting your time in disturbing my sleep with no reason, it would be better if you do your job. Now get out."

The soldiers had finished their search and one of them approached the commander, whispering in his ear. "There is no one here, Janaab."

The commander frowned, taking one last lingering look around the room, his eyes full of suspicion.
