He’s on top of me, both of us having passed out.

My head hurts, and I need to move.

Just don’t look at his arm.

Don’t look at his arm.

I keep repeating the words to myself, hoping to stay alert this time. I reach into his pocket and pull out his phone. It has face ID, so I turn his head slightly to see if I can unlock the phone. As soon as it clicks, I head to his call history and press a name that appears often in the list. It rings once before I get a grumbled, “What?” from the other end of the line.

“Um…sorry. You don’t know me, but Kenzo… Well, he’s passed out in my living room.”

“Give me your address,” the voice orders.

I rattle off my address and hope I didn’t just give my address to a damn serial killer. Then I laugh. Because I have one in my apartment right now, so what’s another going to do? Standing, I head to the kitchen and grab two towels. I throw one over his arm without looking so I can’t see the blood, then lift his head slightly to keep it off the floor.

“Kenzo.” I brush his hair from his face and notice how peaceful he looks when he sleeps. I want to check over his body to ensure he’s okay, but I’m afraid if I do, I’ll just pass out again and won’t be able to answer the door. “Can you hear me?” I caress his jaw as a knock comes on the door, making me jump.

Shit, that was fast.

I gently lay Kenzo’s head back down, then pull open the door to a man who looks a lot like Kenzo but meaner and a little older. And I know who it is right away. He eyes me before he spots his brother on the floor behind me.

“Hi, I’m Mayve.” I offer him my hand, but he pushes past me and walks in without a word.

“Ignore him, he’s rude.”

I didn’t notice the woman when I opened the door. She peers inside at Kenzo and then looks back at me. “Hey, cool eyes.” She smiles. No one has said that to me before. I offer her a small smile before I turn to Kenzo.

“Is he okay?” I ask and get no answer.

“Zuko,” the woman at the door growls.

“He’s been stabbed a few times,” he says.

“Shit.” She hurries to his side. “Do you have any bandages or anything?” she asks me.

I nod and run to my bathroom. Under the sink, I find the first aid kit hiding at the back. Hurrying back out, I hand it to Zuko. He takes it, and then begins to lift Kenzo’s shirt.

Uh-uh, no way!

I look away quickly.

“Don’t like blood?” the woman asks.

“No. I…um… I faint.”

“Oh, okay. I’ll tell you when it’s safe,” she states. “Did you hear that? She hates blood, and yet here he is.”

“Mmm…” is all Zuko replies.

“This is going to be so good,” she whispers.

I don’t know what she’s referring to, but I doubt any of it will be good.
