Obtaining God’s Reward

Those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

1 TIMOTHY 3:13

Isn’t it a wonderful feeling to be proud of someone you love? I’ve had those special moments. After having faithfully served as a pharmacy officer in the U.S. Army Reserves for more than 20 years, my husband, Jim, retired. In standard military fashion, the entire family was invited to his retirement ceremony. I was in awe of the formal ceremony, the full military band, the two-star general’s helicopter that landed on the field, bringing him in to pin on medals and hand out award certificates signed by the president of the United States for those being honored. What a celebration!

This honor was awarded to Jim because of one thing—his faithful service. Even though receiving awards and rewards is never to be a motive for faithfulness, church leaders too can and should receive recognition for their faithful service. As the book of Timothy illuminates, a leader of godly character gains two rewards:

Reward 1—A good standing. This speaks of community respect and a positive, strong reputation.

Reward 2—Great boldness in faith. When a leader faithfully discharges his duties and constantly strives to meet the qualifications of a deacon, he or she will have the personal integrity to speak boldly—and brilliantly!—as a representative of Jesus Christ to those who are lost.

Paul says that faithful service will result in the reward of recognition by the church and by the community, by believers and unbelievers. A faithful servant’s character provides a platform to share his or her faith boldly. Do you want this reward, this opportunity to lead others to Christ?
