Chapter Fourteen
The sound of a motorâa powerful oneâcaused Friday to shield his eyes from the sun and gaze into the sky. It couldnât possibly be an airplane, but as sure as he was standing in the pasture mending the fence, there was a plane flying overhead. A hand waved at him, and Friday waved back, amazed to see a plane this far south of Portland.
The plane circled and dropped lower, like it intended to land.
Friday knew the pasture wasnât long enough to serve as a runway. He watched as the plane made another circle, then landed on the road. He hopped over the fence and took off at a run, wondering if the pilot was having difficulties.
Thoughts of a pilot brought Harley John to mind. Heâd written to Friday, letting him know he was finishing up his lessons near Tacoma.
Surely to goodness, the pilot wasnât Harley John.
Or could it be?
Friday ran faster. When he reached the road, it was to see Harley John climbing out of the plane heâd parked in a grassy expanse on the far side of the road.
âWhat in thunderation are you doing here?â Friday asked as he jogged across the road.
He and Harley John exchanged a brotherly hug, then shook hands.
âI came to see you, you big lunkhead.â Harley John thumped him on the shoulder. âMama Marnie is quite upset you arenât coming to Mollyâs welcome home party, so I came to fetch you.â
Friday gaped at Harley John, trying to process the words that had trickled into his ears. âYou came to fetch me? For a party? In Pendleton?â
Harley John nodded his head and grinned at Friday. âDo you have taters growing in your ears? You heard me. And no, I didnât fly from Pendleton. I came from Camp Lewis. The Army is selling off the surplus planes. This one was supposed to be used in training and was delivered at the end of October. Itâs hardly been used at all, so I bought it.â
âYou bought an airplane,â Friday said, feeling like his brain had finally latched on to something and began clawing into gear. âYou bought your own airplane?â
âI did. What do you think of her? Itâs a Curtiss JN biplane. The Jennys are great.â
âI think sheâs a beaut, Johnny boy. A real beaut. Does Sadie know?â
Harley John shook his head. âNot yet, but Iâll send her a note tomorrow.â He looked at his watch and back at Friday. âMollyâs party starts at six. If we leave by one, that gives us time to get there, clean up, and be ready for the festivities. Are you coming?â
Friday started to say no. Started to explain about Molly needing time to spend with her family without him there in the way. Yet, the longing he felt to see Molly again was too deep, too desperate for him to deny himself the pleasure of spending time with her. He knew if he went, it would be a declaration of intentions on his part, and he wasnât entirely certain he was ready for that next step in his relationship with her.
