Near the west end of the old main runway, we changed into civilian clothes, bagged the Twelve costumes along with the adhesive signs pulled off the sides of the van, threw them back in the vehicle and climbed in after them. On a road south of the airfield, Reb drove east five kilometers until he reached a place where the slope to the plateau was gradual enough for a road.

He took the road down to the back of what looked and smelled like a tannery, then turned onto a tree-lined road. Where the crowns of the trees met over the road, we piled out of the van, Alice, Renata, Lucia, Valeria, Stamp, Ned, Conner, Rita, Carly, and Tanya crowded into a maroon Nissan Ultima SUV. They would head west to the airport at General Roca to pick up a SpookAir flight to the northern hemisphere and eventually to Black Academy for Alice and our three EMVR insiders.

Max and an associate of his named Victor took the van and the bags of clothes and other evidence east to a place he knew in a town called Chichinales where, for a large enough fee, anything smaller than an aircraft carrier could be reduced to its component atoms and returned to Mother Earth. Their unofficial motto: “Patagonia is a very big place.”

Lorena, Reb, Tex, Jaz, and I got into the Imperator and headed west to return to the rooming house. We had a gig that night at Los Huertos. I drove, Jaz sat in the passenger seat, Lorena, and Tex sat in the back seat, while Reb rode backwards in the hatch seat.

I had expected some touching image—a face, a hand reaching up out of the flames, the anguished words of a prayer, my imaginary boy behind the altar sending images on his ICI before the flames finally consumed him—something that could sum up the horror in my own mind, show just a shade of humanity or innocence among our victims, allowing it to devil me for eternity.

But it had all gone so quickly. One moment there were a bunch of juvenile rapists, murderers, and future terrorist leaders seated in the pews, then it was an ocean of roaring flames, the screams rapidly dying, the explosion, then the crackling roar of the fire taking over. According to Alice, from nailing the doors closed to our exit took just under six minutes.

“Clockwork,” said Jazmín, a touch of wonder in her voice.

“What?” I asked.

“There are always fuckups in big ops. A big part of our training was adapting and working around mistakes to get the job done. The plan is tossed out the window once the first shot is fired. It is almost a law. But this went perfectly, exactly the way it was planned, brother—the way you planned it. Renata and
