Chapter 20
Arlo
Despite being freshly showered and back in my room at the B&B, I put Lucasâs hoodie back on. It was mine now. He wouldnât dare take my emotional support hoodie away from me.
I wished I were still at his place, but Iâd needed to shower, change, and check out. Waking up in Lucasâs arms sure had been a nice way to start the day. It helped me feel more settled and ready to tackle the crapstorm facing me.
It had been a herculean task to leave his bed. I wasnât ready to fly home yet. At least I knew I got to see him one more time when I stopped by the restaurant before I went to the airport. Itâd been easier to leave his place knowing we had one more chance to see each other, and maybe I wouldnât fall apart at the restaurant. That last hug, last kiss, was all that kept me going as I waited for an update from my landlord.
I stared at the oddly shaped gingerbread muffin Deb had practically shoved in my hands since Iâd missed breakfast. Sheâd offered to make me something, which was sweet, but Lucas had cooked. Sheâd knocked on my door ten minutes later with a coffee tray, which was thoughtful. Three doilies were on the tray and the mug had doll versions of Santa and Mrs. Claus on it. The woman had a schtick and went all in.
My phone buzzed on the bed next to me. It was Keaton.
âAdulting sucks.â
I laughed. âYou can say that again.â
âAdulting really sucks.â
I picked at a thread on the comforter. âI donât know what to do.â
Keaton let out a put-upon sigh. âI called my parents, and theyâre happy to have us in my old room, but Mom reminded me that my brother has a finished basement with a bathroom, mini kitchen, and plenty of space for air mattresses. But, ugh. I donât want to live with him again. I already paid my dues.â
His brother was a bit of a douche, but a private basement did sound better than squeezing into a full-sized bed in his parentsâ guest room. Though, his mom was a great cook. But with all the stress, privacy was the better bet. Iâd do whatever Keaton wanted, but heâd probably push me to give my opinion.
Like Lucas had the other night at the Christmas lights. Both made me feel safe to say what I wanted when it mattered. I couldnât believe Iâd been lucky enough to meet a second person who made me feel that way, yet I was supposed to leave as we were just starting to get to know each other?
âAnd we donât have the money to stay in a hotel for whoever knows how long itâll take until it gets fixed. Not with the prices at home.â I dropped back onto the bed and covered my forehead with my hand.
âWhat would we be going home to?â
âJob hunting,â I said.
Keaton hummed. I knew that hum. It always signaled an idea brewing.
