Brigitte finished scrubbing all the tables in the Great Hall. Dropping a rag into a pail of water, she wiped her hands on her apron then hefted the bucket with a sigh. René and Claude had departed to their own business and left her alone with her new employment.

René has seen to my transport, my safety, and my employment. I have a roof over my head and plenty to eat. I am free from Tristan and the past. Soon, I will make new friends and adjust to my new life. I must not act a fool over his departure. Besides, there remained plenty of time before he departed. It was not as though he was already gone.

“Dump that pail, and put on a clean apron. The men will be in for dinner by the time you have the tables set.”

Brigitte turned and curtsied to the heavy-boned woman who supervised the kitchen and serving staff. Dinner time. Already. They had barely finished cleaning the room and washing all the dishes from the morning.

“You will serve the tables.”

Brigitte nodded before hauling the bucket to the back door and dumping it. Returning inside, she retrieved a new apron. She tied it on and wound her braid at her nape before her next round of duties began.

The evening grew long and wearisome as she hastened in and out of the hall with platters of pork, venison, and lamb seasoned with wild onions and sides of greens. Ah! It was a pleasure to serve gentlemen. How differently they behaved from the voyageurs. She recalled last night’s visions of the men eating at Boucher’s house. Drunk and slovenly they were compared to these fine men. It almost seemed as though she had returned from the wilderness and was back in Montreal.

At last, René came in and caught her gaze from his place among a crowded table. He gave her only the slightest nod and a small smile, but it was enough to warm her. She dipped her head and set down two baskets of bread. When she looked again, it was Claude who watched her, and—it happened so quickly, but she was certain he winked.
