The day of the party dawned clear and bright. Alison took it as a good omen. The previous night, they had quietly packed the essentials they would need in their small packs. Most of their clothes they would leave. Because the weather was now quite cold, they’d concentrated on warmth. Extra socks, leggings, and anything that could be put to more than one use. Everything had to fit in the small packs so bulky items were not an option with the one exception of their outer jackets. They had no choice. They needed the protection. The clothes they would change into after putting the girls to bed were tucked neatly behind the pillows on the chairs, effectively shielded from casual glances into the room.

The day seemed interminably long for everyone. The girls were looking forward to their party so had little focus for their lessons. Alison and Alexa were mentally running through their plan, decreasing their own commitment to the lessons. Three o’clock couldn’t come fast enough, but finally it did.

“We’re off to enjoy our hour. Why don’t you two take the rest of the day for yourselves? No more lessons. Just don’t get into mischief,” Alexa told the girls.

“No more lessons today?” Anna asked with wonderment.

Alison smiled. “You deserve some time off. Besides, it’s your birthday celebration day, right?”

“Yes!” Anna and Yulia said together. They needed no further urging to jump up and race out of the classroom.

Alison and Alexa followed more slowly, stopping in their room to grab their jackets. They’d already agreed that they should take their daily walk to avoid suspicion. They walked down the back stairs to the kitchen.

“Everything ready for the party?” Alison asked Olga.

She got a grunt for an answer. Suppressing a smile, she walked to the fridge and opened it, pretending to search for something. She was really checking to make sure there was plenty of milk available.

“What are you looking for?” Olga asked her in a rather unfriendly voice.

“Just wanted something to drink,” Alison responded as she reached in and grabbed a bottle of water she saw on one of the shelves.

Another grunt was her response. Alison took her water and made a hasty retreat to the kitchen door. Alexa was already there. They left the grumpy Olga to her tasks.

“Everything all set on your end?” Alison asked Alexa as she sipped the water she held.

“Yes. You?”

“I think so. Be ready. I might not be able to signal you, but you may need to cover for me.”

“Could you be a little less vague?”

Alison laughed. “I’m afraid not. Much of this may simply be winging it.”

“That doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies.”

“Nor me. But it is what it is.”

They didn’t talk much after that, each deep in their own thoughts. When they returned to their room they checked their outfits and decided they were fine for the birthday celebration. They assumed it would only be the household, anyway, since the whole thing was scheduled for a half-hour at most.

At four-thirty everyone gathered in the main dining room.
