I mustn’t let the lizard man out of my sight. When all of the Virtuals are ready for the battle, Deezil will have to return to Slime Beasts and the portal. So long as I stick close to him, he’ll lead me there. And when I finally reach the portal, I must stop him and any of his fellow Virtuals from getting through.

Max’s attention was brought back to Deezil.

“ENOUGH!” shouted the lizard man.

There was immediate silence in the dust bowl.

He paused for a few seconds.

“WE WILL FIGHT THE GAMERS. AND WE WILL DEFEAT THEM!”

Another colossal bout of cheering and clapping rang out.

Don’t take your eyes off Deezil, Max’s brain urged him.

But a second later, a great chinking of metal sounded. The centurions rose to their feet. They headed back to their bases to prepare for battle against the Gamers. Max found himself swept up in the vast crowd as it herded its way back out of the dust bowl. Max wriggled furiously as he was dragged along.

“Let me go,” he shouted. “I have to get back there.”

But the force of the crowd was immense. Max glanced around. He saw Deezil leaping down from the rock and holding an intense conversation with several centurions.

“Please!” screamed Max. “You have to let me go!”

But his cries were ignored. The mass of bodies pulled him on.

And with every step, he was being taken further and further away from the evil lizard man.
