“With your life. But don’t think that I don’t know there’s more to your distant hikes than paying your respects to the huacas at the pass. I’ll get it out of you one day.” Koyam never tried to uncover the secret because she respected Taki, and knew her place in the universe.

Every time Taki disappeared into the mountain, she would return to Cusco and the problem or situation that had been troubling her would resolve itself one way or another. Koyam assumed that on this hike the answer to the poisonous Rodrigo problem would require an equally venomous solution. Koyam waited and whistled––and expected the worst.
