Pine Hill Road and Route 53

Her muscles stiffened and her heart thudded in her chest. A warm, tingly sensation caused her knees to go weak and her skin to turn to gooseflesh.

“Now you can see why I kept it from you. There is no need for you to go to that particular date.”

Cate licked her lips as she struggled to hold back the tears brimming in her eyes. She sucked in a sharp breath.

“I have to go for Jack,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“No, you do not. I will handle her.”

Cate shook her head. “I won’t risk it.” She sniffled, blinking away her tears before she glanced up at him, firming her jaw. “I’ll be fine.”

He stared down at her for a moment before he averted his gaze, staring out the window as he flexed his jaw. “Fine, though I do not consider this wise.”

“Noted,” Cate said as she stared down at the date again, preparing herself, “though I will again point out that you do not get to decide. You need to stop keeping things from me.” She waved the note in the air. “Even things like this.”

“I will always protect you, Catherine,” Marcus said as he approached her.

He wrapped his fingers around her wounded arm and tugged her other hand away. Fresh blood sprang to the surface as she removed the pressure. Marcus traced his finger up the wound.

Cate’s eyes widened as it disappeared, fully healed without leaving a trace on her porcelain skin.

Marcus glanced at her, catching her gaze. “Whether you like it or not.”

Cate stared up at him as he caressed her forearm. Her brow furrowed as a fleeting memory crossed her mind. Her pulse sped as she worried she may experience another temporalysis attack.

“What is it?” Marcus asked her.

The sensation passed and she relaxed. “I don’t know. A memory or a vision. It was fleeting and it’s gone now.”

“Have you kept up with your dragon’s blood?”

“Yes,” she said with a nod, tugging her arm away from his grasp. “Anyway, it’s gone. I suppose we should be going.”

He nodded and she slipped her hand through his arm. He led her from the castle and back toward the house from which they’d come.

“How did you convince my grandfather, by the way?”

“I showed him what would happen if he did not comply with our request.”

Cate considered the statement. “Which was?”

Marcus shrugged. “I do not know. Whatever he saw prompted him to make his decision.”

Cate’s face scrunched. “Are you saying you just showed him something? And you have no idea what it was and that did it?”

“Yes.”

Cate blew out a long breath. “Whatever works, I guess.”

They reached the house as the sun lowered in the sky. Cate’s throat went dry as they entered the silence of the house. They climbed the stairs to the bedroom they’d arrived in.

Marcus eyed her. “Are you certain, Catherine? I can–“

“I’m sure,” she interrupted with a slight nod. Her heart thudded and she felt anything but certain, but she pressed forward.
