Chapter 5: A Big Shock

There was a moment of silence as Luke digested the information. He hadn’t considered the possibility of the car being left at the airport, which meant that the person who had driven it there could already be out of the state, or even out of the country.

He put his head in his hands and thought. He heard Jordan talking on the phone, so he walked over to see what the conversation was about.

Jordan hung up almost immediately. “The police are going to go through the passenger list for all planes out of the airport in the last twenty-four hours.”

“So what happens after we learn where Dad flew to?” Luke asked.

“We go there and find him.”

“But don’t you think it might be like searching for a needle in a haystack? Even if we do find out what place he flew to, by the time we get there, the trail will be stone cold.”

Jordan scratched his head. “I guess you’re right, but what else do we have to go on?”

“Well, we do have those pieces of paper.”

“Yes, we do, so we should bring them along, and maybe it will help us find Dad.”

“Okay. Let’s pack, so we’ll be ready to go when the phone rings.”

The two brothers headed upstairs to get together a few things that they might need on their trip.

They had nearly finished when the phone rang. Luke ran down the stairs, just beating Jordan to the phone. The police officer told him that his dad had boarded a midnight flight to Miami, Florida. Thanking the officer for everything that they had done, he hung up.

“So what’s the destination?” Jordan asked.

“Miami, Florida.”

“At least he didn’t go overseas. The only thing that worries me is this: was he alone, or was he with the kidnappers?”

“I don’t know,” Luke said. “And there’s no way we can find out. Anyway, let’s not worry about that for now. I’ll call Pittsburgh Airport and find out when the next flight leaves for Miami.”

They arrived at the airport without any trouble and were soon sitting in their seats, waiting for the plane to take off. Soon they were in the air and flying toward their destination.

It wasn’t a long flight, and soon the pilot’s voice came over the loudspeaker to announce that they would be touching down in Miami in a few minutes. Jordan put away his dad’s documents in his bag. He had been looking at them for most of the flight, but they still didn’t make any sense.

There was one piece of paper that looked like a map, but it wasn’t like anything that he had seen. It had lines all over the place and many little dots. The other pieces of paper appeared to have a diagram of sorts but, just like the first one, he didn’t understand it. Hoping that he would have better luck later on, he looked out of the window as the plane touched the runway and slowly came to a stop outside one of the terminals.
