Chapter Eleven
âLord Dalrymple.â Constance dropped into a curtsey, looking desperately around the ballroom in search of one of her friends, or Lady Yardley, in case any could come to her aid, but none came into her view. âI am very pleased to make your acquaintance.â
This was, of course, not truly what she meant, but without any other choice as to what she ought to say, she could only offer the required platitudes and hope that something altogether untoward about Lord Dalrymple would soon reveal itself. The ball had been so very enjoyable thus far, particularly when she had waltzed with Lord Seaton, but now, was it to be ruined by her fatherâs attempts to push another gentleman towards her? A knot tied itself in her stomach. What if her father demanded that this gentleman, Lord Dalrymple, was to be her betrothed? What would she do then?
A slight dizziness took hold.
No. I must remain strong. I must make my feelings clear regardless of how much Father is displeased with me.
âWe have been long acquainted, Lord Dalrymple and I.â
Lord Hayman lifted his chin a notch as if this was some sort of accolade.
âIs that so?â
At her dull, toneless voice, her father huffed out a breath in obvious warning, as Lord Dalrymple nodded, his third chin wobbling significantly. Beady eyes looked back at her as though she were a delicate piece of meat from which he intended to carve out a piece for himself.
âAnd more than suitable for the third daughter of a Viscount.â
Lord Dalrymple chuckled as her father laughed aloud, as though suggesting that the gentleman had made a very good jest.
Constance, however, was appalled. Was this how her father spoke of her to others? As though she were lesser than his other two daughters simply by the placement of her birth? What of these gentlemen? Did they know anything about her character at all, or was it only their suitability that was considered by her father?
âShe has, of course, had all the teaching and education required for a young lady.â Lord Hayman gestured to her with a flutter of his fingers as Constance recoiled. âYou will find her quite proper, I am sure.â
âVery good.â
Constance made a quiet exclamation, horrified at how her father was speaking of her. Lord Hayman smiled tightly but, unfortunately, the sound was caught by Lord Dalrymple.
âIs there something you wished to say?â His eyebrows lifted a little. âI thought you were quite well trained?! I did not think, therefore, that a young lady such as yourself would ever interrupt two gentlemen when they were speaking.â
Constance blinked, then lifted her chin even though her heart was hammering furiously.
âI beg your pardon, but my father introduced you to me only a few minutes ago. Thus, we are all meant to be in conversation, are we not?â
Recalling what Lady Brookmire had suggested as regarded making herself appear a little less than perfect for any gentleman her father brought to her, Constance spoke firmly, but without being rude. Rude was not
