23.

He awoke to the sound of the shower running. The bedside clock read a little before nine. Rusty thought about crawling out of bed and joining Janice in the hot water, but something was bothering him. Something small at the back of his mind, he’d been vaguely aware of it last night but was distracted by better things.

Rusty rolled over and reached down to the floor where their clothes lay in a heap. From a pocket of his jeans he extracted her business card, the one he’d used for the trick last night.

Janice Garrett, Senior Account Representative, Rawling + White, New York. A Madison Avenue address in the Fifties, and contact information.

He heard the water shut off and returned the card to his jeans. Then just lay there a few minutes, staring at the ceiling while Janice dried her hair. His attention was split between a stubborn hard-on and the unnamable intuition that had been bothering him.

Janice walked into the room, leaning against the doorframe with a grin on her face and a towel around her waist. She dropped the towel, still wet underneath, and Rusty’s attention was quickly undivided. He pulled the sheet aside to show her his motives, but she shook her head coquettishly.

“Sorry, gotta run.”

“What could possibly be so important for you to do right now in Ocean City?”

“I’ve been neglecting work for the past three days. About a dozen phone calls I need to return and God knows how many emails. Radio silence tends to make my clients nervous.”

“They can wait another hour, can’t they?”

“I just got cleaned up, mister.”

“All right, be like that,” Rusty said, rising from the bed and pulling on some clothes. “You at least got time for some java? If you’ve never had Cafe du Monde’s chicory coffee, you really don’t know what you’re missing.”

“Sweet offer,” she said, leaning in for a quick kiss. “How about a rain check?”

“Sure. You gonna be around awhile longer?”

“I have to be back in New York by Monday. Should really go back today, but since the weekend’s almost here I might just stick around.”

“Solid plan. Give me a call later.”

He walked her downstairs. At the front door she surprised him by wrapping her arms around his neck. She pulled him in tight and whispered in his ear.

“Is it too early to ask for a promise?”

“Guess that kind of depends on what it is.”

She didn’t respond for a moment. He could feel her heart beating fast beneath the sheer dress shirt she wore.

“This is serious.”

He pulled back to look her in the eyes. They focused on his with unblinking intensity.

“Name it.”

“Find out who’s making these drugs. It’s got to be someone in the area. That’s what the toxicologist said, right?”

“Well, yeah. I’m not really sure how I’d go about that. Already handed over her report to the police.”

“Are they going to do anything about it?”

Rusty shrugged.

“I don’t know. It didn’t make quite the impression I’d hoped for.” He paused. “I can keep bugging this lieutenant I know, but only so much.
