Chapter Seventeen

Though we hadn’t done anything criminal, we both jumped about ten feet when there was a rapping on the window of the side door.

I glanced at Leah, who frowned. “I think the fuzz is onto us.”

Praying that it wouldn’t be Ramirez paying us a surprise visit did no good. Still, I allowed Leah do the honors, noting the downturn of her mouth as she peeked through the blinds before tossing the door open.

“Well, hell-o, Detective Ramirez. So nice of you to stop by and bring us lattes and donuts. Unfortunately, my pal and I were just on our way out.”

She blocked him from entering but I gave a small wave and a half smile, belatedly realizing I had never bothered looking in a mirror since I’d tumbled out of bed.

Not to mention, brushed my fuzzy teeth.

Ramirez glanced from one of us to the other before nodding at the bags she had tossed on the couch.

“Seems like you just got back. Or at least one of you did. Am I interrupting something? Another trip to SoCal to check out the man candy?”

Leah snorted and rolled her eyes. “Wouldn’t you like to know? Or are you asking in an official capacity? ‘Cause if you’re not, we have things to do. Official things.”

I gave it to Leah, she never let up where Ramirez was concerned. If there was anyone that could be more bummed at Ramirez for the way he dumped me, it was her. It was nice to know your friends had your back when it was warranted.

Ramirez sighed, perhaps rethinking his approach. “Good morning. AJ. Leah.” He nodded at each of us, before adding, “May I come in?” He enunciated each word while waving the coffee tray directly in front of Leah’s face.

He knew as well as I did that she was anything but immune to the scent of coffee. She tried the best she could, but her eyes gave her away as she trailed his hands while he shifted the tray perilously back and forth.

“What is that, anyway? Some sort peace offering?” She pointed at the bag of donuts while continuing to focus her sights on the tray of Dutch Bros. lattes.

He nodded, smiling as she released an exasperated huff while waving a hand, gesturing for him to enter. Ramirez carefully placed his offerings on the counter and after doling out beverages, Leah dug into the bag, pulling out a donut hole, smacking her lips in satisfaction after inhaling a half dozen while Ramirez and I watched in silence.

“Oh, don’t mind me,” she replied, wiping a hand across her mouth. “Please go ahead.”

She nodded toward the bag but I waved it off, my stomach churning at the smell of fresh grease and sugar. Combined with the current company, it wasn’t a good combo.

“You look tired, Ramirez,” I said after a long moment, noting the bags settling beneath his eyes had darkened and the scruff on his face was in need of a bit of upkeep.

He’d looked tired the last
