Chapter Four

A GOLDEN MOMENT AND BEYOND

All the happiness, excitement, and pride that Team USA generated on February 22, 1980, could not hide one fact: They still had to win one more game to earn the gold medal and complete the miracle. Two days later the players stepped onto the Lake Placid ice to face Finland. If they won, the gold was theirs. If they lost, and depending on what happened in a game between Sweden and the Soviet Union, they might not win any medal.

As they did against the Soviet Union, the Americans fell behind in the first period, 1-0. They tied it on a Steve Christoff goal in the second period, but the Finns quickly scored again on a power play. The Americans entered the third period trailing 2-1. Could they come from behind again?

It took only a few minutes for Phil Verchota to tie the score. Then Rob McClanahan made it 3-2 on a shot that went between the Finnish goalie’s legs. Once again, all the Americans had to do was keep the lead they had claimed. But they made it hard for themselves, drawing two penalties almost back to back. The short-handed defense rose to the occasion, killing both penalties. Then a ref whistled Verchota for another penalty with about four minutes to play. This time the defense not only shut down the Finns, but Mark Johnson worked his magic again. He caught the puck before it bounced out of the Finns’ zone, fired a shot, took the rebound, then shot again for the goal.
