Have you ever heard of Buffer? Buffer is this amazing app that allows people to queue up their tweets and social media posts so that the app can post them for them in the exact schedule they choose. But, before creating Buffer, the founder Joel Gascoigne wanted to test potential customers and see if anyone would be even interested in such an app. For that purpose he created a landing page. Buffer’s landing page wasn’t extensive and boring. It included simple “Hi, sorry, you caught us before we’re ready. Give us your e-mail address and we will keep you updated”. Of course, people had no idea that Joel hadn’t even started building it, but hey, they were interested. So what did Joel do next? Did he begin the creation process? No, showing interest and being ready to pay are two very different things. Joel wanted to see if there would be someone willing to use their credit cards. So he added a ‘Plans and Pricing’ page. People were clicking the paid plans, and that was the indicator that Buffer would not be a complete failure. So he finally built it.
