Splitting the next block of stone he faced, Emman quickly stepped up to the next one and worked as fast as he could. He couldn’t believe how close he’d come to not taking a diamond pickaxe with him. Why would he need one? The last thing he’d planned on doing was digging hole in the ground or anywhere else for that matter. Now working his way as quickly as he could, he was relieved that he had it. It had been a while since he’d been in contact with Helli on the other side. How she and Fang were coping, he dreaded to think. He smashed the cube of stone in front of him and was hit with a shaft of light. He’d made it. Putting down his pickaxe, Emman stuck his head out of the hole and looked to the left of him. There she was holding tightly to Fang’s fur, and the hound balanced precariously on its back legs. “Helli!” He waved to her and watched her scan the surrounding rock before seeing him.

“Emman, you did it.”

“Nearly. I just have to make it big enough for you and Fang. —Just hang on.”

“Nothing much else to do.” She smiled over at him.

Pulling his head back in, Emman quickly got to work building a big enough chamber for the three of them to stand in. Working his way around the sides and digging out a floor, he stood back and imagined Fang in the room. It was going to be a tight squeeze. But anything had to be better than having them out there. Now came the hard part for both of them. He went back to the opening and stuck his head through it. “Helli, can you…” He watched her wave the boomerang at him.

“Way ahead of you.”

Emman held up a hand. “Don’t throw it. Not yet. Just give me a second.” He went back inside, there was no way she’d be able to lean back far enough to toss the boomerang inside. He slapped his forehead and paced around the chamber. “Think, Emman, think. How would you get that stupid thing in here?” There was the string, but Helli had it. Plus, even if she did throw it to him, she’d have to still have to throw the boomerang after that and what if she missed? She had to throw it and he had to make sure it flew in the opening. “We need to catch it, Emman.” He walked around. “But how? How can we catch it?” He needed a glove, like a baseball mitt, but he couldn’t touch it. He looked at the pickaxe he’d tossed on the ground. The handle was long enough, and then there was his sword. But then he’d need something to tie to them. Cloth. That was it. He looked around. Where was he going to find a piece of cloth big enough to tie to them? He hadn’t time to make any. Emman look down at his clothes. This was going to be embarrassing.
