Chapter Thirteen

The King’s Sentry

Millewa’s worry must have been written all over her face when she came to the bottom of the tree, as Sydare was straight onto her about what had happened with his dad. As the sprites packed the food into their bags, Millewa began filling Sydare in on what Alvie had lectured her about.

“He worries too much,” Sydare said flatly, “I wouldn’t worry, he feels some sort of responsibility to Dewdrop since your dad died and he really hasn’t adjusted well. I’d forget he said anything at all.” Millewa could see Sydare was trying to make her feel better but she couldn’t shake what he’d said about a war. Any time her mind slipped towards thinking about war, the eagle pin began ferociously vibrating, almost as if it was excited by the idea.

“Shall we go then?” Bee zipped the back of Millewa’s pack and flew to sit on her shoulder. Millewa was grateful for the distraction.

Of all the times Millewa had left their valley, they had travelled South and stopped at the river before trudging back. This time was different.

A sharp cut across the town square, avoiding eye contact with anyone who bothered to look and they were due East. Their pace quick, almost too quick for Millewa’s legs to keep up, but they wanted to be out of town before anyone spotted which direction they were going.

The landscape began to change quickly and drastically. Once through the thick, rough bush, the trees ceased to exist and open, sweeping plains stretched for miles, further than any of their eyes could see. Wind whipping their faces, grass as long as their knees and the smell of strawberries enveloped their noses, making their mouths water instantly.

Millewa had never been in air as fresh as this before, she gulped it in as if she’d never breathed before and wished they could live in this moment forever, instead of going to whatever they were walking into.

The pure silence broke, as Phlox took flight from Sydare’s shoulder and buzzed a metre from Millewa’s face.

“So, you never filled us in on your power,” Phlox pressed, “What is it? Bee and I were taking bets, I thought fire because you are absolutely ruthless and stubborn. Bee thought water because she views you as calming. Stupid thought really.”

“I don’t have one.” Millewa replied flatly.

“What do you mean you don’t have one? Every elf gains a power; it’s just how development works!” Phlox was shocked and slightly upset.

“From all the training material, she conjured nothing and couldn’t control a thing. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Sydare added.

“Yeah right. Strange. Maybe because we all thought you were dead, that’s why you didn’t develop anything, the magic just faded away when you were declared gone.” Phlox looked puzzled, but he also nodded in agreement with what he had just said. “Where were you anyways? And how on earth did you get back here with no magic?”

“That, I can answer. I was in the human world, adopted as a singed baby and raised by two foster parents.
