The NAACP held this protest parade in New York City in 1917 after a race riot in East St. Louis, Illinois. The riot shocked the country. African Americans were alarmed because the riot took place in a northern state, not in the South. It was a sign of the tension caused by growing numbers of black migrants who settled in northern, midwestern, and western cities.

From its beginnings in 1909, the NAACP fought for civil rights, an end to segregation, and a national anti-lynching law. In this photo, taken between 1930 and 1950 by M. Smith, NAACP members in Harlem pose. They are selling anti-lynching buttons to raise money for NAACP campaigns.
