Chapter Eleven

Present Day

Morning sunlight played on my eyelids causing me to bury my face in the pillow. I could feel a tugging, not on my physical body but on our bond. My mate needed something. I hoped it was more of what we did last night. Cracking open an eye I peered at her. Seeing her in my bed in the full light of day was a dream I often had but never thought would come true. She was lying on her side, her top leg bare and out of the covers, her hands in prayer position sandwiched between her pillow and her cheek. I got the sense she had been watching me for a while.

“Morning,” my voice was rough from sleep.

“You sleep like the dead,” she griped.

I scooted closer to her. Resting my hand on her hip, I buried my nose in her coconut-scented hair. “What is it you need, baby?”

Her reply was a grumble. “Everything.”

I lightly brushed my lips over her earlobe. She arched into me, shivering delicately. I loved her reaction to my touch. “Where should I start?”

She roughly shoved me away. Sitting up, she tugged at the blankets covering her perfect breasts. “I’m serious. I need everything,” she pouted. “Your abduction and ransom scheme didn’t leave much time for getting any of my things. I have a backpack with my wallet, a makeup bag, one change of clothes, and a bottle of Advil. I don’t even have any clean underwear or a damn toothbrush.”

I scrubbed my face trying to get more fully awake. “I promise we’ll pick up your things after the shift. In the meantime, I have a new toothbrush in the bathroom, a hairbrush, and that shampoo and conditioner you like.”

“And I am, what? Supposed to walk around nude?” she sassed. Before my grin could split my face in half at the suggestion, she held up her hand. “Strike that. No need to answer.”

I couldn’t resist wiggling my eyebrows before I conceded. “There are a few clothes in the closet that will fit you. While I would love a naked Akela 24/7, I don’t think I’d love to see the guys enjoying the view of what’s mine.”

She answered with an eye roll and quickly hopped up to examine the closet. The former alpha of the house could not look at his wife’s things after she died. There was a ton of stuff I’d sorted. Some things I thought Tom would want to have again one day, those I packed in a rubber bin and stored in the basement. I also gave a bunch of stuff to charity. There were a few things, though, that made me think of Akela. I kept those. Not because I thought she would ever actually use them, but because it made pretending this day would come possible.

She stood in front of the closet for over ten minutes examining the items. They were not new. So she would know I didn’t buy them for her. I wasn’t well off like her former pack.
