CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Alexander

HE MUST FIND HER. HE had to find her. He simply couldn’t live without her. She was his whole world. The breath in his body. The blood pumping through his veins. She was his sun. His moon. His everything.

Something was niggling at the corner of his brain, but Alex shoved it away. He didn’t have any time to waste dwelling on anything and anyone but her. He had to find her, no matter the cost or how long it took.

King Cassius had guards he could send to search for her. Alex would have to ask him for aid. He would beg on his hands and knees if he had to.

He marched back across the causeway, barely glancing at the guard following him.

In the center of the causeway, a glass slipper glittered in the moonlight. Alex halted and knelt in front of it. He hadn’t paid it much attention when it had fallen from her foot, but now it was his last link to her.

He picked it up and cradled it to his chest. Besides the girl who had run away with his heart, this glass slipper was the most precious thing in the world to him.

Would he ever see her again? What if he never found her?

The ache inside him was too great. He leaned over and kissed the place on the cobblestones where his beloved had stood moments before, looking at him with such an aching expression in her eyes. What had been wrong? Why wouldn’t she let him fix it?

All he wanted to do was protect and cherish her. He would worship the very ground she walked on if that was all he had left of her.

“I will find you.” It was a promise he’d keep even if it took the rest of his life.

With the glass slipper pressed to his heart, Alex stood and strode the rest of the way down the causeway and through the main gates of the castle.

After crossing the courtyard to the third tower, Alex flung the doors to the ballroom open. Inside, the music had already hushed. Groups of people were standing, talking. Probably discussing his beloved’s dash from the garden.

Why had she run? He’d just proposed their hearts’ desire.

He shoved that thought away. She must have had a reason. He simply had to find her, and all would be well. He would solve all their problems once they were together.

“King Cassius. I require your assistance.” Alex strode across the ballroom, ignoring the groups of people. They were nothing to him unless they knew where he could find his love’s whereabouts.

“Gladly, Your Majesty.” King Cassius gave him a bow as Alex stopped a few feet from him.

King Cassius always had been the most accommodating king. Alex couldn’t remember why he had ever thought he disliked the man. Alex held up the glass slipper. “I need to find the girl that fits this shoe.”

The smile dropped from King Cassius’s face for a moment, and he blinked as if Alex’s request had somehow startled him.
