Chapter Sixteen

Jordan

Seth’s contact was more than a little nervous. My bullshitometer was reading high and my patience was running low.

“Who gave you my name?” he asked again, wiping his hands on the front of his trousers.

“Xavier Bartholomew. He said you were an associate of his father’s and Matteus Blackwood. As he’s busy right now with a pregnant wife, he asked me to come and visit in his place.” I’d made sure to check there was an association before I arrived, even though his name was given to us by Seth. It was a small world, and it had gotten smaller every single day.

“How do I know you’re telling the truth?” His eyes narrowed on me before his gaze moved to check his surroundings for about the millionth time.

I shrugged one shoulder. “Ring him and ask. I’m sure Hugh and Matteus can verify who I am as well, although we both know neither of those two want their patience tested.” It was a gamble, but if anyone had dealt with Matteus before, they would know he hated people ringing him. He believed his time was precious and if he wanted to speak to you, he’d lift the phone himself. Asshole.

To reinforce my point, I even held my phone out to him. “I have them on speed dial.”

He shook his head and moved more into the shadows of his already dim shop in an attempt to hide from heaven only knew who since there was only him and me standing here.

“Are you here to collect the artifact for Matteus?” His voice was nothing more than a hissed whisper and all my instincts went on red alert.

I studied him for several seconds. “I am the hand of death and wrath of the Council. Their will is mine to enact.” I evaded his question with my declaration.

“He said he would send someone when the time was right. It is one of the last pieces in the puzzle.”

And suddenly it all fell into place. The artifacts that Shannon had recovered for him, the missing clues from long dead Council members. “Is it marked?” I asked.

His eyes widened and he cleared his throat. “Yes. It took me a while to find it, but it’s there.”

I nodded once. “I’ll take it with me. I need to know about these diamond mines.” I showed him the photograph I’d taken off the deeds.

“You found them?” His gaze came up to lock with mine. “We thought they were forever lost.”

“They were in a safety deposit box. Two brothers had placed them there for safekeeping. The second key was only discovered recently.” It was the truth but I made sure to mention no names. Hugh and Matteus knew that the Jenkins brothers had the deeds, it was why they descended on those documents like a starving man presented with a meal.

“Is this the property of the Council?” he queried.

“It is the property of the men who control it.”

His grin made the hairs at the back of my neck stand to attention. “There are many people who would like to get their hands on that paperwork.
