Chapter 18
Levi
âYou want me to go down to Venezuela? With a newbie? With a civil war on the horizon?â One of my oldest friends, Carlton Linelli, laughed down the line at my apparently absurd question. âSeriously Levi, whatâs going on? Has small town living rotted your brain?â
I rolled my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. âThinking more clearly than I have in twenty years. Can you do this for me? Iâd consider it a favor to be repaid at a later date.â
The laughter died and Carlton sighed thoughtfully. âYouâre serious.â
âI am. This is a big opportunity, and only the best will make me happy.â Iâd been trying for days to arrange things for this Venezuela trip, and it was just about set. âIt shouldnât take longer than a week.â
When he sighed, I knew I had him. âYou know I canât turn down a trip, and I get to show off my tan biceps.â
I laughed. âThat wonât be necessary, keep your bulging muscles to yourself please.â
âOh, itâs like that, is it?â
I smiled. âNo, just this trip is important. Thatâs all.â
âFine, Iâm in. Email me the details.â
I flashed a triumphant smile and pumped my fist in the air. I loved it when a plan came together flawlessly. âThanks Carl, I owe you one.â
âAnd donât you forget it,â he grunted. âI have a date to get ready for, with a model. Iâll be looking for those details.â
âIâll send them over now,â I assured him and ended the call.
âYouâre leaving.â Michelleâs voice startled me, and I turned to see her arms crossed, face twisted into a frown. âI guess giving me enough notice to make plans for your absence was too much to ask?â
âMichelle.â My shoulders fell at her anger, her insinuation. âIâve been here for months, helping with Mickey and trying to make your life easier and still you donât trust me?â It hurt, but I knew Iâd done this to her, to us.
âTrust takes time, and a few months, while appreciated, isnât near long enough to forget a lifetime of packed bags and rushed goodbyes.â
âI know and Iâm sorry, but I canât change that Michelle. Iâve apologized and I showed up here when you needed me to do more than just say that Iâm sorry. What more can I do?â I started to have a deeper understanding of Laceyâs problems with GG in that moment. Would my actions today ever make up for the past?
âYou can start by not rushing off at the first sign of problems in the world, Dad.â
I nodded. âI deserve that, and I know it, but this time youâre wrong.â
My daughter, as stubborn as I was, tightened her arms around herself and lifted her chin high in the air, a smug look on her face. âSo that wasnât Saul with another assignment that you just canât pass up halfway around the world?â
I grinned at her words, a sad grin that served as a reminder of the damage my actions had caused. âNo, smartass. It was Carlton.â
Her face paled.
