CREATE AND DESIGN A CHART
This section shows you how to create a chart and establish the basic design, or âinfrastructure,â of a chart. The topics in this section cover the tools involved in the first two basic steps in building a chart.
Build a Chart
Excel guides you through the process by assuming youâll move through one or more of the three tabs on the ribbon that contain chart-building tools. The tabs are essentially the steps to build a chart.
1. The Insert tab provides the means to initially create a chart from one of several chart types and subtypes. For many purposes, these charts are as far as youâll need to go.
2. The Design tab (under Chart Tools) lets you further refine the overall layout of the chart elements, change the chart type, and apply design styles. It also provides tools to add chart elements, such as axes, labels, and graphics. You can also add visual elements to help analyze data, such as trendlines.
3. The Format tab (under Chart Tools) lets you fine-tune selected elements in terms of shapes, styles, color, fills, effects, and size.
Charts can be created in one of two forms:
⢠Embedded charts are objects that reside on a worksheet, much like a drawing or picture, along with other objects and the underlying data. The chart is enclosed within a border and can be sized and moved similar to other graphic objects.
⢠Chart sheets are workbook sheets that contain a chart separated from its underlying worksheet. These charts also can be sized and moved within the sheet, and other graphic objects, such as pictures and SmartArt (professionally designed layouts combined with text-entering capabilities), can be added to the chart sheet.
