In the figure below, I have Ctrl+clicked eight cells in B7:E8 anywhere from one to eight times to show you the progression.

This bug is fascinating to me because this process is one the Excel team never thought you would do, and it reveals a little bit of the logic behind how Microsoft shades the selected cells.

I typically would shake my head and go about re-selecting the cells correctly.

Thankfully, someone out there decided to do something about Excel’s inability to unselect a cell and wrote up a great suggestion at Excel.UserVoice.com. Then, hundreds of other people voted. And now, in Excel 2019, Ctrl+clicking will remove a cell from the selection as described in this chapter.
