TWENTY-THREE
A PUDDLE OF red liquid lay on the splintered floorboards. I watched a crimson droplet fall in slow motion as it splashed.
Then another.
So beautiful.
Each time another one landed, it made an exquisite echo-like soundâplop!âaccompanied by a burst of red dots leaping into the air. It was enchanting. Sublime, even.
I wondered where the red liquid was coming from. Then, I became curious as to where I was and what kind of art exhibit I was watching.
The harsh truth hit me when my consciousness moved up a level. The red liquid was dripping from me. I was in a chair, my head having fallen to the side. I righted myself, a wave of nausea passing over and through me and then away.
Awareness of my situation crystallized as I looked at Nikolai about three feet in front of me, that damned half-smile ever beaming.
I looked down. My wrists and forearms were both secured with duct tape to the plastic armrests of a cheap gray office swivel chair. My feet were bound to the chairâs stand, my legs splayed open. Nikolai sat in a similar chair facing me.
âNice going, Jakob,â I said.
He whipped the belt over my face again right-to-left this time, never breaking the half-smile.
âNo need for insult,â he said.
âThat is your name, isnât it?â I said.
âI am no chaynyik.â
âYouâre no what?â
âHow you say in English? Tranny. Shemale.â He leaned forward so I could smell his lemon-scented breath. âChick with dick.â
âHuh?â
He whacked the belt left-to-right. I felt consciousness slipping away again, but I reached up and grabbed it back. I told myself to try working on the duct tape. It seemed to be a pro job. The more I twisted it, the harder it seemed to bind me.
Then I laughed.
âAre you sure?â I said. âYour skin is so soft and lush. I bet you can go two weeks without shaving before somebody says âYouâve got a little dirt on your face there, Nikki baby.ââ
Another whip right-to-left, the half-smile gone.
âOoh, struck a nerve there, did I?â I said. âWhat, are you a transphobe, Nikki? Tut-tut-tut. Thatâs not very politically correct of you. Or is it that youâre offended that maybe I guessed your tiny little secret? Ah, thatâs it, isnât it? You like to put on dresses and walk the streets in a wig and makeup, donât you?â
Left-to-right again. My face must be the size of a watermelon by now.
Then, I went speechless, consciousness falling away.
Iâm not sure if I passed out or not. It felt like a hundred years before anyone said anything.
âYou know why you are not dead yet?â Nikolai said, his voice embedded inside an odd echo chamber.
âBecause you really like me?â I said, my voice echoing the same way.
âBecause Jakob wishes to see you.â
âOh, goody. Itâs about time. I was getting tired of this mystery. Whatâs the deal with pronouncing the j with a y-sound, anyway? I never got that.â
âYou are funny, no? Ha-ha-ha. Funny funny funny. Hm, what shall we do until Jakob arrives?â
My senses returned again. This time, I looked around.
