TANK AND MYCA sat in the classroom, waiting for Arby. He usually showed up right on time, but today they had been waiting for him longer than usual.

Tank had half a mind to go searching for him when the door flew open, and Arby walked in, a big smile plastered on his face, his typical pile of textbooks he carried with him nowhere in sight.

“Hello, Mr. Ruba,” he said. “How would you feel if I told you we were going on a field trip today?”

Myca’s face lit up, and he jumped out of his chair. “Anything to not have to go to school.”

“Please meet me at the front door in a few minutes.” He left without another word.

“A field trip?” Tank asked.

“Yeah.” Myca was already heading for the door, his books forgotten on his desk. “It’s still school, but you don’t have to do work.”

Tank followed closely, making it to the front door where Arby had already called a rover. Just then, Kirk walked up the stairs.

He sneered when he noticed Tank. “Heard you boys were going on a field trip today. You sure you don’t need me to come along?”

“After watching you train Myca, I know I don’t need you to come along,” Tank snarled.

Kirk glared at Tank before patting Myca on the shoulder. “Why don’t you go play on the grass down there with Arby while you wait for the rover?”

As soon as Myca and Arby were out of earshot, Kirk took a step closer so he and Tank were inches from each other. “Careful there, lizard. You think you’re tough because of that cannon attached to your arm. You haven’t even used it in a real fight.”

Tank straightened to his full height. “I don’t need a cannon to kill you.”

Kirk grinned. “You worry about Myca staying safe. But I’ll have Arby send me regular updates to make sure you’re doing your job.” He patted Tank on the shoulder and slammed the door behind him.

It took every ounce of strength to not send a blast through the door.

“So where are we going?” Tank called to Arby as he joined them on the grass.

“We’re going to visit a specific type of plant that goes into making Bisekt ships,” Arby said. “Very fascinating.”

“Anything else in the desert we should be worried about?”

“There are some predators out there, but they’re mostly nocturnal, so we should be fine, sir.”

“You have your cannon. We’ll be fine,” Myca said.

Tank still wasn’t convinced.

“If anything happens—”

“Nothing will happen, sir. We’ve gone on field trips many times,” Arby said as he opened the door. “The rover is here, so let’s hurry along before it gets to be too late.”

They walked down the front stairs to the rover and climbed in. It wasn’t the same as the one Tank had ridden in with Enzu, but it was just as nice. It raced through the desert, kicking up sand in its wake.

“So what kind of plant is it?” Tank asked as they bounced around in the carriage.

“I can’t tell you yet, sir.
