Katy Bowman, founder of Nutritious Movement, says that a restrictive movement diet is similar to a restrictive food diet. When we eat certain foods, the nutrients in those foods communicate with our bodies and are used in a certain way. Bowman says that movement is similar. The body is affected by the movement that you do (or don’t) feed it.

All this means is that I don’t just want you to increase your daily steps, although that is an excellent start if you’re currently sitting most of the day. What you should be looking to increase is total movement for complete metabolic health and longevity. This might include standing instead of sitting, squatting to pick something up, sitting on the floor to fold laundry, or doing the monkey bars at the park.

Instead of worrying about weight gain as you age, worry about what would cause that weight gain. A lowered metabolic rate due to muscle loss and the inability to move and exercise the way you want should be a concern, not arbitrary weight gain.

When thinking about movement as we age, I often think about Dr. Peter Attia’s concept of the “marginal decade,” that is, the last decade of your life. What do you want your life to look like in your last decade? What do you want to be doing? How do you want to move? You can do something about keeping your body mobile and your muscles intact: you have that power—use it.

Movement’s price of admission is low. When you compare it with balancing your diet, driving to the gym, picking up a set of dumbbells, disciplining yourself to stop scrolling and get to bed sooner, reducing your stress, or addressing your gut health, moving your body a little more is really simple. And a lot of the activities listed here are more like a treat than actual work!

For me, that’s really the key when incorporating any new habit into our lives—making it fun. I hope this chapter showed you that movement doesn’t have to be complicated or take a lot of time. You can squeeze more healthy movement into any season of life.
