Chapter Thirty
LUCAS
Freya's telling the truth.
I'm not sure why I believe her wholeheartedly, but I do. She's never been better. The girl doesnât look good, and that is disturbing as fuck. When she looked me in the eye and told me, it felt like she truly bared herself to me. Freya wants me to know that this is as good as she's ever been. So, what does that mean? What do I do with that?
Just as I start wishing phones were allowed and prepare myself to hunt my brother down so we can talk about this, he pops up behind me.
"Hey," Ronan says casually, like he didn't just make me almost shit my pants. He chuckles, though, telling me he noticed. "You know, had you been using, like any of your senses, you would have known I was walking toward you as soon as Star walked away."
There's that nickname again. "Why do you call her that?"
As is his signature move, Ronan tucks his hands in his pockets. "Because her hair is basically white and glows like a star. Not to mention, when she looked me in the eye the first time, I swear I was looking at galaxies."
I nod, agreeing with his assessment of the little omega. Her eyes are the bluest fucking things I have ever seen. Instead of commenting, I ask my next question, "What's up?"
"How is she?" Ronan inquires, all dreaminess fading with his rising concern.
I clench my teeth and grit out, "Never been better." Fuck, even repeating her words makes my stomach roll with unease. Nothing will beat the tired soul she bared to me through her galaxy gaze, though.
I swear to hell, it was like looking into the depths of heartbreak. My chest constricted and my breaths came in shallow pants. Her sadness swept me away and by the time I was able to drag myself out of the pain and sadness that swallowed me whole, Freya had left me in her wake.
"Shit," Ronan curses and I nod, looking in the direction she went. "Luke, you okay?"
"Huh?" I look back to see him watching me with a critical eye. I sigh and relent the truth. "Not really, man. Not only did she justifyingly berate me for being a dick for the first time, but I swear she was trying to tell me something."
His eyes narrow. "What do you mean?"
I snap. âI mean she looked me in the eye and told me, not just with her words, but with everything in her, that the best she's ever been is not enough!"
My raised voice draws the attention of a few people milling about before dinner. I look away, not giving a ratâs ass about any of them besides the girl who left me fucking reeling. Ronan gives them a tight smile and grips my arm before ushering me closer to the omega studies building where we are less out in the open.
My brother watches me like he did before he dropped the news in the woods about Freya's classes.
