Chapter Seven

Kyle’s feet were rooted to the tile floor outside of Emma’s hospital room. She—his daughter—was only there for more testing, now that they’d learned Kyle was a match. Morgan had met him in the parking lot, and Landon agreed to give them some time alone together while he parked.

“She’s just here for the day, but there’s a lot of waiting around and they had a vacant room.” Morgan shrugged. “It’s more comfortable in here.” She reached for the door handle, and Kyle grabbed her arm.

“Wait.” His heart thumped wildly in his chest. “I know she doesn’t know who I am. But does she know…?” Sweat pooled across his forehead as the relevance of the next few minutes slammed into him like a Mac truck.

“She knows you’re the man who will make her feel better.” Morgan eased out of his grip, then put her hand on his arm. “Kyle, it will be fine. And remember to call me Mia, even in front of Emma—especially in front of Emma. She’s never known me as anyone else.”

Kyle took a deep breath and followed Morgan into the room, his eyes instantly locking with the little girl sitting on the bed. She was wearing a pair of white shorts with a pink blouse. Her feet hung over the side of the bed, her toes curled into a pair of pink flip-flops. Golden ringlets of hair were pulled into short pigtails on either side of a pale face offset by bright blue eyes. Morgan had already told him Emma had endured a round of chemo in preparation for a transplant, and that Emma’s hair was still growing in, thinner than before. Ultimately, the transplant hadn’t occurred due to medical reasons Kyle didn’t completely understand. He hoped there wouldn’t be a problem this time. It just seemed wrong that any child should have to go through chemotherapy.

She was a cute kid, and Kyle didn’t think he felt that way just because she shared his genes. But there was no doubt that Emma was sick. Morgan had explained the symptoms of asplastic anemia. Emma had bruises on her tiny pallid arms and legs, very little color in her face, and she was frail.

“Emma, this is the man we’ve told you about, Mr. Brossmann.” Morgan went to her daughter and placed the back of her hand against Emma’s forehead, but only for a couple of seconds.

Kyle forced his eyes away from Emma’s and looked at Morgan. “Does she have to call me Mr. Brossmann? Maybe just Kyle?” Dad wasn’t an option, and Kyle felt relieved about that at the moment. Anything else added to his overloaded heart and mind could cause him to unravel completely.

“Sure.” Morgan smiled, then folded her hands in front of her. Kyle held her gaze for a surreal few moments.

“Mr. Kyle, thank you for coming a long way from your home to help me to get well.” Emma barely smiled, but when she did, Kyle’s insides swirled and flipped. Her tiny voice was as dainty as she was.
