The Crow tribe is made up of many clans. Moses told her the people of his clan were the Apsáalooke which meant “children of the large-beaked bird”. Over time, French interpreters working among the various clans, mistranslated the word Thunderbird to mean “people of the crow” which gained momentum and became the name most commonly used for the tribe. The Crow were famous for their horsemanship, expert at not only capturing wild mustangs from the many herds that traveled the land, but in training them. Their warriors often had to fight other tribes over the horses belonging to the Crow. Moses stopped signing and nodded when Jayne interrupted to say that was probably why he was so good with horses and loved everything about them.

“Makes sense,” he acknowledged, not revealing the fact that if everything went according to schedule, a pair of horses would be delivered in a day or two, depending on the weather. He intended to take Jayne on a long ride up the mountain to give her a far more personal look into the history of his people.

He continued to sign about how the Crow had migrated from what was now Utah across the plains until they landed in what became Yellowstone Park. His fingers moved slower as her eyelids grew heavier, often closing only to pop open again to attempt to concentrate on his hands. Finally, when they closed for a longer moment, he slid her off his chest and onto her pillow.

When she opened her eyes, he put his palm over his face, fingers splayed. Drawing his hand down his face, his fingers closed together until his thumb and index finger formed an “O” beneath his chin.

Recognizing it as the ASL sign to sleep, Jayne smiled and nodded, her eyes closing again. Moses waited until her breathing evened, the lines on her face smoothing. Bending down, he brushed his lips over her cheek before climbing from the bed.
