“That didn’t look hard,” Lily said. “Can we try?”

Ms. Trainor shook her head. “It’s actually a little trickier than it looks.”

“Please, Ms. Trainor?” Sirena asked. This will be easy for me, she thought. I found my sparkle this morning without even trying!

Other students asked to try, too. At last, Ms. Trainor nodded. “Just remember, this may not work for everyone the first time. So don’t worry if you can’t do it yet.”

Sirena pushed her notebook away. She closed her eyes like Ms. Trainor had.

“Try to relax,” Ms. Trainor said. “Think about how you felt this morning. I bet you were excited about your first day here! And I bet your parents were proud of you.”

Sirena remembered how she couldn’t wait for the day to start. She remembered her parents’ smiles. She remembered how special it felt to get her necklace from Mom. She began to feel that same bubbly feeling in her tummy that she felt before.

Sirena started thinking about earning a pearl for her necklace on her very first day at the Magic Academy. But then she frowned. The bubbles disappeared. She felt a little sick. She started to worry. I thought I was going to be really good at this. But what if I’m not? What if I don’t learn any magic today? What if I’m the worst student in the class?

Sirena’s eyes snapped open. She could tell her horn was not twinkling. Ms. Trainor said this wouldn’t work for everyone, she thought. She looked around the classroom. No one else seemed to have found their sparkle, either.

But then Sirena turned to Lily. Her horn was glittering like sunlight on the ocean.

“Hey! I did it!” Lily exclaimed. She elbowed Sirena. “Did you see?”

Sirena nodded. Then she quickly looked down at the table. She knew it was wrong to feel jealous. But she couldn’t help herself.

Ms. Trainor floated over to Lily and Sirena’s table. “I’m impressed, Lily,” she said. “But the rest of you did really well, too. I saw a lot of sparkles beginning. With more practice, you’ll be able to find your sparkle every time you want to.” She patted Sirena’s shoulder. “You were actually really close. I think you’ll learn this very quickly.”
