Chapter Twelve

“Jay Vick.”

Luca’s head snapped up. Not at the name, but at the malice behind the voice that uttered it. One second passed. Two seconds, three seconds—seemed like hours. He could feel the animosity sear across the room as a fire lit in his body. Remorse hit him like a sledgehammer. No—not remorse. Well, maybe I chose the wrong one all those years ago. Life would have been so much easier.

The black eyes, so much like his own, aimed daggers at him, gauging his reaction. Pride swelled his chest as he watched Damiano stare him down, quietly demanding an answer. Damiano’s gaze challenged him, as it had done from the first day. It had amazed Luca, that he’d never feared him. Not when he was sixteen-years old and not now.

Luca’s mind scrambled to formulate a response. His heartbeat seemed to echo in the room as Damiano stopped in front of his desk. His gaze didn’t waver from Luca’s as he waited.

Think, Luca! He can’t know. I made sure to hide all the evidence. He doesn’t need to know the truth. No, he mustn’t find it out. It would destroy all the hard work to finally have a worthy successor.

“That friend of yours who tried to steal our bonds?” Luca chose the road of ignorance, hiding the wince at the spark of anger that flared in Damiano’s eyes.

“Don’t play me for a fool, Luca,” he sneered through thin lips.

“I don’t know what you want me to say,” Luca continued to hedge for time.

“I want to know what his association with you is and I’m warning you, don’t insult me with continued denial.”

Luca stared at him, contemplating whether Damiano was playing on a hunch or if he had uncovered something concrete.

If only I knew what he did with those bonds. I need a position of strength without giving him a means to worm his way out of the family. By the time he realizes my plans, it would be too late for him to turn away.

Luca had big plans for the future of the Occhipintis. He already had the majority of the Congress in his pocket. Those bonds would ensure that with the plan he was about to set in play, Damiano, with him by his side, would rule the country.

A low-life, unhinged imposter like Jay Vick isn’t going to hinder or impede the plans I have in hand.

Gianni entered the office after a brief knock on the door, breaking Damiano’s gaze. The irritation at the interruption was accompanied by the sound of his teeth gritting together.

“It’s good both of you are here. We need to discuss Giorgio.”

Damiano kept his gaze on Luca, but his expression remained blank.

“Don’t tell me he’s begging to be allowed back into the famiglia again,” Luca snickered as he lit a Cuban cigar. His eyes—a well of jet black ink, held a gaze with the same fearsomeness that Damiano’s did. The tip of the thick brown cigar disappeared between his lips, a small trail of smoke escaping from the corner of his mouth, dancing its way to the ceiling above.
