“M USKMELON ” AND BLACKBERRIES

♦ As you can probably tell by now, we Hoosiers like our sweets. Yet, one of our favorite desserts in the summer was fresh “muskmelons” (the local name for cantaloupes) from the garden. They were difficult to grow and didn’t always do well, and when we had a good crop we savored them.

Just cut the melon, peel the skin, seed, and serve very cold. If we had fresh blackberries, they were served on top of the melon with just a dash of sugar. If there were no blackberries, we ate the melon salted.
