His head must have started throbbing anew because he yelped and dropped to the cot once more.

“Jaysus,” he muttered. “Hurry with the bloody pills, is it, or I’ll never make it to vespers.”

“Never mind your prayers, Uncle Jack,” Caeli said, and she tugged him upright again, pulling hard on his arms. “We need to keep you moving to get you out of here – and we’re going to get you out. We’ve no choice.”

“You’re right,” Elmore said. He’d opened the door a crack and was pointing. “Guard’s awake, and he’s not happy.”

Jack’s eyes fell on me at that moment, and they widened in surprise when he looked closely and saw the lengthy scar on my face, a reminder of our time on Mutton Island.

“Jaysus, Max, is that you?” he said, and his voice was high-pitched with a tone that approached incredulity. “What in the name of God and all that’s holy happened to yer bloody face, man? You look a mess.”
