Chapter 17
The plan is in place. The last weekend of August, Dylan and I will hike the route my dad and I take every summer. Dylan has his plane tickets picked out, though heâs using an app to track the flight and waiting for the prices to drop. If worse comes to worstâhe promised he would drive out if needed. Lori, of course, is thrilled.
âOh my God!â she screams when I tell her. I called her on video chat almost as soon as Dylan left. âI knew it! I knew it had to be the reason you havenât been texting me as much!â
I tell her everything in one swoop, trying to get the words out as quickly as possible before she can interrupt me. âCalm down, you act like Iâve never gone out with a guy before,â I say. Iâm sitting on the bench seat of the bus, my laptop resting on the table. The bus windows are open to let some of the fresh summer air in, even if it is a little muggy today.
âNo, youâre right. But this has a sort of Hallmark movie vibe. I mean, come on, Marly! And heâs coming here?â she asks, eyes wide.
âAt the end of the month. To hike, yes.â
âEither way, Iâll get to meet him, right?â Her smile is huge. I swear she enjoys watching me date more than she enjoys dating herself. Much more fun to observe from the outside when youâre not the one whose heart is at risk.
âI think so. As long as you donât scare him away.â
She raises her eyebrows at the sarcasm, but lets it slide. âIs he going to take the rest of the trip with you? Very Hallmark inspired right there if he travels with you in the bus.â
âHeâs going to fly out to meet me,â I say. I push my laptop away to make some space on the table and grab food from the cabinet next to me.
âAre you making lunch right now?â Lori puts her face closer to the screen as if that will help improve her view.
âYes,â I say, bending down to reach the fridge thatâs located in one of the bottom cabinets and pull some cold cuts out.
âMarly, now is not the time for eating! You still have things to fill me in on!â
I grab a few slices of ham and cheese and top it with ranch, not bothering to make anything fancy. âNo, I told you everything,â I tell her, shaking my head as I take a bite.
âNo kiss?â she asks.
âNo kiss,â I repeat.
âSo youâll bare your soul to him, but not kiss him?â
I roll my eyes at her. âTotally different things. Weâre still practically strangers,â I tell her.
âYou would tell a stranger about you and your dadâs hiking traditions?â she asks, raising an eyebrow.
Most people who know me know I hike Mount Washington every year, but Lori and my parents were the only ones to know about the bubbles. And I guess Dylan knows now as well. âOkay, I get it,â I tell her, laughing a little.
