Within days of returning to Chittor, Rana Sanga found himself embroiled in another contentious dispute. Because the Malwa minister, Madan Rai, sought sanctuary in Mewar after alienating his master by accusing the Sultan’s blood relations and favourites of plunder and brutality in open Durbar.

Soon, an embassy arrived from Mandu, demanding Madan Rai’s immediate surrender to his sovereign’s representatives.

“Does Sultan Mahmud Shah of Malwa forget Mewar’s tradition of granting sanctuary even to defeated foes?” countered the Rana enthroned in the Durbar hall, holding Bappa Rawal’s sword and shield. Perfectly matched pearls around his turban and neck complemented Sanga’s regal attire. Armed guards, and retainers holding yak tail whisks, silver-encased peacock feathers, and other insignia of royalty stood behind him. “And anyone who thinks that we will violate our laws of hospitality after promising sanctuary to Raja Madan Rai, challenges the entire Sisodia clan!”

His heir Bhoj Raj, and all the chiefs and ministers seated in that incense-scented chamber nodded at these words.

Malwa’s soft-spoken yet wily ambassador Osman-ul-Mulk salamed again. “O great Ranaji, who is ignorant of your kingdom’s unique history and traditions? All Hindustan knows how chivalrously you allowed Sultan Muzzafar Shah of Gujarat to retreat from Edur just recently! But this man does not deserve your protection. For it was he and his Purabia dacoits who looted Ishmail Aga’s silver and gold caravan! And Hajoor’s letter to our Sultan regarding this brazen theft caused great consternation in our capital, Mandu!”

For generations, the silver and gold mining and trading monopoly in Mewar had belonged to Ishmail Aga’s Dawoodi Bohra family. Rana Sanga knew that besides providing rich revenues, this mutually beneficial arrangement also contributed to the purity of his kingdom’s coinage, which was accepted in every city and trade mart from Khorasan to Sri Lanka, and Basra to Burmah. The looting of this caravan had enraged Sanga, because like all his forefathers, he did his best to secure every trade and pilgrimage route. But he couldn’t control events beyond his own territory. For that, he had to rely on treaties, and the cooperation of neighbouring rulers.

But Sanga knew when he was listening to blatant falsehoods. “Why would the man who used his own wealth and warriors to make Mahmud Khilji Sultan of Malwa commit such an act of plunder? Do you think it was under the mistaken belief that Bohraji’s sovereign wouldn’t demand full restitution for such a crime against any Mewari merchant?”

The Malwa ambassador responded with a venomous look at Madan Rai. “To finance a revolt against our Sultan by his entire Purabia clan, Maharaj. Such ambitious men are seldom satisfied, even under the kindest masters.”

The accused Chandela Raja now rose from his seat next to Prince Bhoj Raj, and sought the Rana’s permission to speak.

“Ranaji, would I have dared to arrive in Chittor as a penniless fugitive seeking sanctuary, if I possessed a king’s ransom after looting one of Mewar’s treasure caravans? Not only my clansmen, but thousands of Muslims too have risen in revolt because Sultan Mahmud Khilji imposes
